I took this photo in the Dogon region in Mali. It shows a young man cross- dressing in a mask to satinize neighboring Fulami woman. Dogon men regularly adorn themselves with items of female dress and jewelry during their mask rituals. When masked they may only circulate the village on paths used by menstruating women. In a society and country like Mali that is so phobic about ‘un-normative’ behavior it is incredible to see that the so-called ‘unstraight’ is actually an embedded and accepted part of their cultural heritage.
