My object is a scarf which I bought in Siena, Italy in 1990. I’ve brought it along for 2 reasons.
1. Memory- I bought it while I was on my honeymoon, on the day I went to the Palio in Siena, the ancient horserace which is run twice a year around the city streets. It represents one of the city’s ‘contrade’- the clans or families which each have a name, a city area and church. This scarf represents a contrada known as ‘L’ onda’- the wave.
2. Identity- As a costume curator, I’m interested in how clothing can be used to explore identity and this scarf is a good example because it represents a particular ‘tribe’ or group within Siena’s ancient city culture.
Dedicated to my husband, James Panklurat and all the great memories of our honeymoon in Tuscany, 1990. - Identifierare
