- Titel
- The Ladies of Llangollen tea bowl, early 19th Century, English; 5.6cm high, 9.3cm wide
- Beskrivning
- Their sexuality was speculated about at the time - and still is; there was never any 'proof' that they were lesbians, although they shared a bed; but... today, would they have stayed in Ireland and married ?
- Alternate Description
-
Sarah Ponsonby (1755?-1831) and Lady Elizabeth Butler (1739-1829) Eloped together from Ireland in 1778 to escape unwanted marriages. They settled at Plas Newydd near Llangollen in Wales, in 1780.
They lived together for over 50 years, and despite a rather secluded existence, they became celebrities. Their rather grand fan base included many writers (Lord Byron and William Wordsworth were enthusiasts), and several potteries produced commemorative wares, such as this pattern, to celebrate/cash in on the Ladies' fame. - I found this little teabowl (cracked, and stained with use) in an Edinburgh antique shop in the 1990s. I love it.
