When I was young, my mother angrily beat me whenever she heard “your son is a pede” from my neighbors. To her, “pede” was something insulting. She beat me, and added salt to my wound when she cried, “I wish I did not give birth to you but a chicken’s or duck’s egg”.
As I grew up, many kids my age, whose families laughed at me, got addicted to drugs or committed crimes, going back and forth from jail. Then, my mom and neighbors saw my charity activities, including a Moon Festival party for kids in my poor neighborhood.
After this, bad words at me reduced; and mom accepted me. To my surprise, she took me out to buy cloth for a dress. “I am buying this for my daughter. Here she is!”, she told everyone.

Lúc tôi còn nhỏ, mỗi lần nghe hàng xóm mách “con bà pê-đê”, mẹ điên tiết đánh tôi rất đau. Với bà, pê-đê là thứ rất nhục nhã. Mẹ đánh, xát muối vào chỗ đánh và chửi: “Phải chi không sinh mày ra mà sinh cái trứng gà trứng vịt!”.
Lớn lên, nhiều đứa bằng tuổi tôi dính vào ma túy, vào tù ra tội. Đó là con của những gia đình từng chế nhạo tôi. Hàng xóm và mẹ chứng kiến tôi đi làm từ thiện, tổ chức Trung thu cho trẻ em xóm nghèo tôi ở.
Những miệt thị bớt đi, mẹ cũng dần chấp nhận. Vài năm trước, tôi ngạc nhiên khi mẹ rủ tôi đi chọn vải may đầm. Tôi vẫn nhớ lúc mẹ nói ở chợ “Mua vải cho con gái tôi, nó đây này!”.
