Bow-tie
- Titel
- Bow-tie
- Alternate Description
- I told my friends that I am queer during my last year in college and after that I lived openly at school. I got used to talk about my sexuality and express my non-ridged gender identity freely. But at home life was different. So when the final year in college was over and it was time to make graduation pictures for me, my family, and my friends, to capture the moment, I had to balance expressing my true self and not upsetting my mom. She suggested me to wear a dress to be photographed in, just like my twin sister, but I told her I wanted to wear pants and a button up shirt. However, it didn't feel complete. So without telling my mom, I went and bought a pair of suspenders and a bow-tie and that's how I appeared on my college graduation pictures. While I reject the idea that bow-ties and suspenders are strictly for men and queer women because of the associated masculine stereotypes, my mom and the rest of my family do not. Wearing the bow-tie I felt complete; like I was "out", without being "out", and it was liberating.
